OUR DEACONS

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN OF DEACONS: Robert Bright

I want to take this opportunity to speak to you, on behalf of your deacons, about the deacons at

Fifth Avenue Baptist Church and the Deacons Ministry Program.  The best way to do so is to tell

you who we are, what we do and share our approach to service for you.

The current deacons are Ellen Banks, Robert Bright, Edward Shipe and Joyce Underwood.

A deacon is one of two offices (pastor and deacon) recognized in the New Testament Church.

At Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, our deacons are ordained.

Deacons are set aside differently from any other elected position in the church and their calling is

the high calling of ministering to people in the name of Christ.

As servant leaders we take seriously our role and responsibilities within the confines, as we prayerfully understand them, according to Acts 6:1-6.  Therefore, we hold fast the scriptural mandate, . . . "to take care of the physical and logistical needs of the church so that the preacher/pastor can concentrate on their primary calling."

Every member and family group at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church has been or will be assigned a deacon.  We believe this approach will enable us to more effectively minister to the needs of our Church members as well as to the Church's immediate community at large.

We are also developing strategies with the Church's Outreach Committee by which we pray God's blessings to: (1) re-connect with inactive Church members; (2) identify those in our community who may be unchurched and (3) reach out to those who may not know Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Your Fifth Avenue Baptist Deacons pray that we forever remain obedient to this calling and ask for your prayers as we seek to do God's will.

Yours in Christ,

Robert A. Bright

Chairman, Deacons Board
